Necessity is the mother of invention. This famous proverb attributed to Plato certainly applies to John Walson Senior, who was selling TV sets in Mahanoy City in the late 40’s. In order to better demonstrate the sets to customers, he purchased a large antenna and hooked it to a utility pole on top of a nearby mountain. he would then take his customers up to the antenna site and show them the picture from off-air television stations out of Philadelphia. But he soon realized it was a lot of work to take the customers up there, so he ran a cable down off the mountain to his store…and the cable industry was born. In 1979, the 96th Congress and the National Cable TV Association recognized John Walson Sr. as the founder of the cable television industry and in 1993 he was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame.
