Bloomsburg University’s Concussion Institute got the go ahead last fall, and since that time, they’ve been performing baseline tests like this one on volunteer athletes. A number of different departments are involved in the effort to study concussions and why they affect different athletes, in different ways and for a different amount of time. The institute’s main lab performs two tests on the athletes, a series of balance exercises, one set on a flat surface and another on a cushion. The second tests involve the new Oculus Rift virtual reality headset and a series of challenges involving a room that shifts and changes right in front of your eyes in a disorienting manner. While they’ve only been doing the tests for a few months, they’ve already noticed a trend. Two grad school students ran us through the tests on this day and Hazzard says it’s a great opportunity for them to practice the skills they’re taught in the classroom. Bloomsburg University also is part of a care consortium that is studying a little bit more in detail what, at the NCAA level , concussions are all about and how they affect student-athletes.
Keithan’s Bluebird Garden has been at the southern tip of Sunbury since 1921, but not many valley residents even know it exists. The garden boasts close to 100 varieties of azaleas, along with rhododendrons, lilies and some plants and trees you may never have seen before.
Murray urges you to head off the sidewalks when you visit to truly appreciate all that the garden has to offer. It’s open to the public and has its share of visitors during the day, either for a stroll or lunch or a sit on the swings. It also hosts between 17 and 25 weddings a year. You can call the City of Sunbury for more information.
And you can see more on these two segments on “In Your Neighborhood” July 6th at 6:30 and 9:30 on SECV8, exclusively on Service Electric Cablevision.
